Joni Taylor

Following a thorough search of the women's basketball community, Greg McGarity, the UGA J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics and Dr. Carla Williams, UGA's Deputy Director of Athletics, realized their best choice to become the Georgia Lady Bulldogs' next head coach was approximately 300 yards from their offices.

On Sunday, April 12, 2015, Joni (Crenshaw) Taylor, a member of the Georgia Basketball Staff for four seasons, including three as associate head coach, was appointed just the second full-time head coach in the program's illustrious history.

In her first season at the helm of the Georgia Lady Basketball program, Taylor led her team back to the NCAA Tournament for the 32nd time in school history, compiling five wins against ranked opponents (most for a Georgia team since 2006-07) on their way to a 21-10 record and 9-7 mark in SEC action. The Lady Bulldogs, who were picked ninth by league coaches in the preseason poll, finished strong in 2015-16, winning seven of their last nine regular season games to earn a No. 6 seed (just one game out of fourth place) in the SEC Tournament.

Georgia's 21-10 final record marked only the 12th time in league history that a first-year head coach won 20 or more games in his or her inaugural season at an SEC school, while her 12-1 start to the year was the third-best start for any SEC head coach in his or her first year with a program.

Taylor was honored for her successful first year as head coach, earning the prestigious WBCA Maggie Nixon NCAA National Rookie Coach of the Year Award, the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Whack Hyder College Coach of the Year Award and the Advocates for Athletic Equity Rookie Coach of the Year honor.

Chelsea Newton

Chelsea Newton, a former Big East Defensive Player of the Year at Rutgers and assistant coach at her alma mater, was named assistant coach for the Georgia Lady Bulldogs on May 4, 2015.

"Anyone who spends 10 minutes with Chelsea can see that she is a rising star in this profession," Joni Taylor said upon Newton's hiring. "She walks through the door with instant credibility because of her accomplishments as a standout guard at Rutgers and her successes at the professional level both with the WNBA and overseas. Chelsea is an excellent recruiter, has a knowledge and passion for the game that is contagious and will be a great role model for our players. She will help demonstrate to our players what it means to be a true student-athlete."

Newton played a crucial role in leading the Lady Bulldogs back to the NCAA Tournament in her first season in Athens, as Georgia finished with a 21-10 overall record and 9-7 league mark.

Newton was a standout guard at Rutgers from 2001-05 and, following a successful professional career in both the WNBA and overseas, was an assistant coach at Rutgers for five seasons.

She displayed a penchant for helping attract top talent to Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights inked classes that ranked No. 3 in the nation in each of her first two full seasons as an assistant coach. All told, Rutgers has signed 11 prospects ranked in the ESPN HoopGurlz top-100 during Newton's tenure, including six top-20 recruits. That talent helped the Scarlet Knights reach postseason play four times over the past half-decade. Rutgers secured NCAA Tournament bids in 2011, 2012 and 2015 and also captured the 2014 WNIT Championship.
